I'm excited to introduce our Guest Designer for Sketch Week - Patricia Roebuck!
Short bio: I am a 40 something, living in Mandeville, LA, just 35 miles north of New Orleans. So instead of a Southern accent, I have a touch of a New Orleans accent. July of 2009 we became a Chinese adoptive family after over three years of waiting for our daughter. I love my family of three, and my cat named Archie.
How did you get started scrapbooking? My first scrapbook was from a trip to Japan in 1998. Walmart was the only place I could find supplies. But with the adoption of our daughter coming soon, I started to learn about scrapbooking in 2006 and soon discovered there was no limit to what supplies were needed to scrapbook. I love it as a creative outlet as well as documenting life.
What is your favorite American Crafts product? I love the variety of products offered by AC. The papers are double-sided with lots of great designs; cannot have enough Thickers, This to That Foam adhesive, and cardstock; the colors of the embossing powders are so fun and add a little extra pop to your pages; and American Crafts is the only album I use to store my scrapbook and Project Life pages!
SUMMER IS WAY MORE SWEETER WITH A NEW SWIMSUIT by Patricia Roebuck
I love the colors of Neapolitan, Sketchbook, and Gardenia. I wanted to pull out the vibrant, juicy colors for this summer-themed layout by cutting out the patterned paper to use as part of the design. I kept the background paper simple, while adding pops of the patterned paper and color so the layout would flow. With so much color and layers, I added a strip of the brown Ivy Terrace Gardenia paper near the photos. I wanted to continue the fun, summery feel of the layout, so I cut the Ballerina Tile Letters into banners, attached them to another piece of paper, added a border from a strip of Vine Nursery Gardenia Paper, and attached it using the clothespin.
Supplies: Silly Skedaddle Paper (35628) - Neapolitan, Stitched Ruffle Paper Sun Kissed (35647) - Neapolitan, Sparkling Smile Vellum (35627) - Neapolitan, Pretty Please Paper (35637) - Neapolitan, Simple Romance Paper (35645) - Neapolitan, Cheerful Notes Paper (35626) - Neapolitan, First Date Paper (35632) - Neapolitan, Vine Nursery Paper (35621) - Gardenia, Greenery Atrium Paper (35618) - Gardenia, Charlotte’s Shade Paper (35684) - Sketchbook, Saffron Study Paper (35693) - Sketchbook, Harper’s Hue Paper (35687) - Sketchbook, Cobalt Composition Paper (35679) - Sketchbook, Ivy Terrace Paper (35623) - Gardenia, Rubons (43395) - Minimarks, Ballerina (42233) - Dear Lizzy Tile Letter, Screenprinted clothespins (86200) - Whittles, Solid Glue Runner (61711) - This to That, Foam Dots (61709) - This to That, Precision Pen 01 (62301) - Black
I really love the designs on the Sketchbook papers. They inspired me to create this simple, quick card by cutting out the frames from Paige’s Portraits paper, creating a graphic, linear, and artsy looking card. Keeping the frames as the focal point, I cut out one of the flowers from the India Ink paper to add to the largest frame. Next, I cut out different pieces of patterned paper. A simple and inexpensive way to add pops of color and texture.
Supplies: Paige’s Portraits Paper (35691) - Sketchbook, Sydney’s Snapshot Paper (35688) - Sketchbook, Magenta Musings Paper (35692) - Sketchbook, Gaby’s Gallery Paper (35681) - Sketchbook, India Ink Paper (35685) - Sketchbook, Gwyneth’s Graph Paper (35694) - Sketchbook, Sweet Sundress Paper (35634) - Neapolitan, Accent & Phrases (42232) – Dear Lizzy Neapolitan Remarks Books, Fern (53274) - Thickers, Solid Glue Runner (61711) - This to That, Foam Dots (61709) - This to That
TAG YOU'RE IT by Patricia Roebuck
The soft, but warm, rich care-free colors of the Neapolitan papers, vellum, and stickers were perfect and so easy to layer and create a cluster for my main photo to go along with the fun, care-free pictures of my daughter and her best friend playing. For some extra pop of color, I added the Cardstock Shapes from Bits. For added dimension, I cut out the stamped Neapolitan stamp from cardstock and layered under a sticker using This to That Foam Circles. I really loved the variety of the Thickers and tile letters together for a title to help connect and tell the story behind all of the photos.
Supplies: Delightful Bouquet Paper (35644) - Neapolitan, Sweet Sundress Paper (35634) - Neapolitan, Lovely Afternoon Paper (35638) - Neapolitan, Warm Memories Paper (35633) - Neapolitan, Sea Breeze Paper (35643) - Neapolitan, Sunny Skip Paper (35636) - Neapolitan, Carmine Collage Paper (35689) - Sketchbook, Die Cut Cardstock Shapes (77264) - Bits, Fabric & Epoxy Brads (78074) - Elements, Accent & Phrases (42232) – Dear Lizzy Neapolitan Remarks Books, Splendid Black (53296) - Thickers, Jar Acrylic Stamps (59157) - Dear Lizzy Neapolitan Stamps, Serendipity (53293) - Thickers, Ballerina (42233) - Dear Lizzy Tile Letters, Stamp Marker (62618) - Grapefruit, Precision Pen 01 (62301) - Black, Foam Dots (61709) - This to That, Solid Glue Runner (61711) - This to That
SO SWEET ON YOU by Patricia Roebuck
The Gardenia paper flower helped to create the sentiment for this card. I used the softer colors from the Neapolitan papers and used the darker kraft paper seal to bring the focus to the cut out jar. By cutting out a butterfly and banner from Gardenia papers, they created the triangle design principle. So your eye goes around from the butterfly, orange hearts and/or flower, and banner. I used the Splendid Black Thickers, to emphasize “you” and to balance and ground the cluster.
Supplies: Sweet Sundress Paper (35634) - Neapolitan, Silly Skeddadle Paper (35628) - Neapolitan, Sea Breeze Paper (35643) - Neapolitan, Carmine Collage Paper (35689) - Sketchbook, Fresh Blooms Paper (35630) - Neapolitan, Cheerful Notes Paper (35626) - Neapolitan, Annual Terrace Paper (35617) - Gardenia, Cheerful Notes Paper (35626) - Neapolitan, Fabric & Epoxy Brads (78074) - Elements, Splendid Black (53296) - Thickers, Serendipity (53293) - Thickers, Sage (72026) - Delights, Solid Glue Runner (61711) - This to That, Precision Pen 01 (62301) - Black, Stamp Marker (62618) - Grapefruit
The design came easy since my daughter was popping bubbles. I worked with the beautiful design and simplicity of the Crimson Charm Sketchbook paper by accenting it further with cut out pieces of more Sketchbook papers at the top, bottom, and corner. After cropping the photos into circles, I used the different sizes as a guide to cut out the Silver Lining Vellum for a soft, subtle look. I added more pops of color by stitching around the vellum circles, punching out more circles and flowers from Sketchbook papers, then added Neapolitan brads and Gardenia paper flowers to create more layers and help the design flow.
Supplies: Crimson Charm Paper (35674) - Sketchbook, Sadie’s Story Paper (35695) - Sketchbook, Carmine Collage Paper (35689) - Sketchbook, Harper’s Hue Paper (35687) - Sketchbook, Sienna Spirit Paper (35672) - Sketchbook, Sydney’s Snapshot Paper (35688) - Sketchbook, Silver Lining Vellum (35635) - Neapolitan, Fabric & Epoxy Brads (78074) - Dear Lizzy, Sage (72026) - Delights, Accent & Phrases (42232) – Dear Lizzy Neapolitan Remarks Books, Fern (53274) - Thickers, Solid Glue Runner (61711) - This to That, Precision Pen 01 (62301) - Black
