A 3D Layout by Leigh

Hello friends! Leigh here, with a home decor piece using the brand new Amy Tangerine line, Shine On. I love the fresh color scheme in this line, and decided to make a paper art cacti layout in a shadow box frame. You can make a layout up to one inch in depth with this shadow box frame.

My inspiration for the cacti, came from the package of faux suede flowers in this line, and I thought they looked like the blooms on cacti in the desert where I live. I free hand cut all the shapes except for the “Alive” leaf pattern. 

Here, you can see three of the cacti have multiple layers cut to form a 3-D shape. You can do this without an electronic cutter, by tracing around your first shape again for a total of three times. Then fold each copy in half and glue the copies together to form the 3-D look. After the glue dried, I trimmed down the two sections that face upward so you can see the pattern and the sections behind a little better. Then zig-zag stitch several places on each plant to resemble the spikes.

Before you adhere your cacti to the background, you can use the Vicki Boutin Art Crayons to make mixed media splatters to coordinate with each color of cacti. Once the splatters air dried, I placed the cacti and measured for the pattern paper below them. Have fun layering on the colors you like to see on your art piece.

From this angle, you can see the folded part of each plant better, and the stitching on each one. I left the threads a little long so the stitching would stand out a little more on the page. The Faux Suede Flowers in this new line are such great colors! I used three on this page. 

The Shine On puffy heart stickers were added in three colors to resemble new growth on the plants. The title is from the Vicki Boutin line of Thickers, and the journaling was typed and cut into strips. The photo was clipped with a clothespin from the Dear Lizzy Stay Colorful line.
