Hello American Crafts Friends! It's Terhi Koskinen here again with you, bringing you some colorful inspiration to this unusual springtime. I’m happy to tell you that you can now find some of the best Picnic in the Park products at Joann’s! Picnic in the Park is now part of Designer Destination and this line designed by Amy Tangerine is full of bright and joyful colors and patterns.
Patterned papers and coordinating embellishments can be used in million different ways. Instead of inventing new things, I thought a good old scrapbook layout could bring joy for today! We all have had to find something meaningful to do and for me it’s catching up our family scrapbook albums. Scrapbooking makes me go back to happier times, living them all again and writing the memories as detailed as possible. It helps me to focus on the silver lining!
The layout I created for today is telling a story about a very talented baker in our family. My twelve-year-old has become a very independent baker and loves to make cookies, cupcakes, and other cute and girly sweets.
The rainbow design I chose to support the story is there because even with a joyful, independent and very determined baker as she is, we also have had quite intense discussions about the aftermath the baking causes. If you have lived with a teenager, you know what I’m talking about.
Now, you might be thinking why I’m including the unpleasant part to the story. It’s because this part might be important after the teenage years have passed and the emotional roller coaster has slowed down. They will be fun to go back and read one day.
The creation process was simple, although it took some time. First, I cut patterned papers with a hexagon shaped punch. If you’ve got an electronic cutting machine or matching dies, use them. Or simply choose another easy shape like a small circle or square. The hexagons are a bit over 1” in size.
I used all possible colors, in fact only the paper “Aloha Leilani” would have been enough to make the rainbow but I added some patterned colors, too.
In a real rainbow the colors are horizontal, but with this abstract rainbow I turned the colors slightly vertical. Then, more paper cutting! All the flowery papers are so pretty in this line and I couldn’t stop fussy cutting. Maybe less flowers would have been enough, but now the layout has delicious layers through the rainbow.
Want to know why I chose this photograph instead of the finished cupcakes or posed smile? There are two cans of milk in the lower left corner. The everyday life objects like stamps, newspapers and milk cans can tell us so much about the current era.
Enjoy this week and remember to keep on crafting!
